According to the American Water Works Association, 2013 audit data for 246 water utilities indicates that the utilities incurred 130.1 billion gallons of water lost to system leakage, causing over $77 million of excessive treatment and pumping expenses. i

 

And the EPA states: "National studies indicate that, on average, 14 percent of the water treated by water systems is lost to leaks.  Some water systems have reported water losses exceeding 60 percent." ii
