Case Study: Grayson Utilities Non-Revenue Water Reduction

Grayson, KY

OVERVIEW

Grayson Utilities Commission serves over 4,000 water customers, providing safe, clean, reliable drinking water for families, businesses, and the community.  Portions of the Grayson water distribution system have been in place since the mid-1900s, which can present unique challenges.  As distribution systems age, leak detection and repair become critical to maintaining the system, but often require significant time and resources.  Grayson Utilities, in partnership with Integrity Water and Energy, eliminated more than a third of their water loss, and implemented new technology that makes it much easier to identify areas of concern and new leaks, and ultimately leads to more rapid and cost-effective management of the system.

SOLUTIONS

Integrity Water and Energy implemented solutions that addressed immediate needs, while also enabling long-term success:

  • Located and repaired previously undiscovered leaks
  • Established new water loss zones, allowing more focus on problem areas
  • Upgraded billing meters to state-of-the-art technology, which improves measurement accuracy, provides new insights, and enables a first-class customer service experience
  • Implemented Advanced Metering Infrastructure, providing real-time water usage data
  • Established the Water HubTM, an online daily Non-Revenue Water tracking tool that highlights water loss opportunities and quickly identifies new leaks

IMMEDIATE AND LASTING RESULTS

Our partnership with Grayson Utilities resulted in a best-in-class water loss management solution.  By the end of the 14-month project, over a third of Grayson's water loss was eliminated, and new tools were in place that continue to provide new insights about the water distribution system.

The utility team continues leveraging the new tools and approaches to quickly identify and resolve leaks, ensuring the long-term success of the water system for decades to come.
